Tanjong Pagar Train Station to move to Woodlands
Singapore and Malaysia have finally agreed on the fate of Tanjong Pagar Train Station. It was announced yesterday that the train station will move to the Woodlands train checkpoint by July 2011.
While this came as good news, for the two countries have had disputes over the valuable land for two decades, it is not known what will happen to the old station building.
The structure was build in 1932 to serve the needs of Singapore town, particularly the transport of goods from its harbour. The station’s architectural style is strongly European and said to be influenced by the architect of Finland’s Helsinki Station, Eliel Saarinen. The entrance to the station is marked by four towering statues, symbols of Malaya’s economic pillars - Agriculture, Commerce, Transport and Industry. They are designed by Rudolfo Nolli, an Italian architect who also designed Singapore’s Old Supreme Court Building.
